Leftover watermelon in the fridge is not necessarily safe – if not done properly, the risk of bacterial contamination is very high!

This is the secret to keeping the sweet and cool taste of watermelon while still ensuring health safety.
Watermelon is always considered a "national cooling dish" every summer. However, due to its large size, a watermelon is often difficult to eat all at once. Therefore, many people have the habit of storing the remaining watermelon in the refrigerator as an ideal way to preserve it - without knowing that this can potentially pose many health risks.
It is important to know that the deep cold temperature of the refrigerator not only makes the watermelon lose its original delicious taste but also creates conditions for bacteria to grow if not stored properly. Melons can be cross-contaminated, even changing their taste after just a few hours of refrigeration. So how to keep the half-eaten watermelon cool and safe without having to put it in the refrigerator? The secret lies in keeping it naturally cool and properly wrapped - a simple tip that has been trusted by many housewives from the past to the present.
How to preserve half-eaten watermelon
First, use plastic wrap to cover the cut surface of the watermelon. Watermelon has an attractive aroma, so it is easy to attract insects, especially flies and ants. The plastic wrap will help prevent bacteria and insects from coming into contact with the flesh of the watermelon, thereby reducing the risk of contamination and spoilage.

Place the half-wrapped watermelon in a basin of diluted salt water. Be careful not to let the water completely submerge the watermelon, but only let the water level reach about 2/3 of the height of the watermelon. If you let it completely submerge, the flesh of the watermelon will easily absorb water, losing its sweetness and becoming mushy. Finally, place the basin of watermelon in a cool place, away from direct sunlight. Watermelon preserved in this way can stay fresh for 3-5 days. Be sure to change the water every day, especially in hot weather, for optimal preservation.
