At the age of 111, Kiyotaka Mizuno, currently the oldest man in Japan, recently celebrated his birthday amid warm congratulations in Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture.
His century-long life is remarkable not only for the historical events he has lived through, but also for the simple, disciplined, and positive lifestyle he has maintained for decades.

The longevity secrets of a 111-year-old man

During a birthday gathering a few months ago, Mr. Mizuno shared that he never set a goal to live a long life. What he aimed for instead was to live each day calmly, without excessive worry, and without becoming a burden to others.

This optimistic mindset and ability to let go of stress are considered key foundations of his remarkable health at such an advanced age.

According to longevity research organizations, around the age of 100, Mr. Mizuno began paying closer attention to his daily routine. He wakes up early in line with his natural biological rhythm, eats three meals at regular times, prioritizes seasonal foods, and limits his intake to about 70% of a typical portion.

Every morning, he eats one banana, while yogurt appears consistently in his evening meal. In addition, he maintains light snacks in moderation and avoids overeating.

Geriatric experts note that people who live long lives often share common habits, including adequate sleep and a regular lifestyle. Sleeping 7–9 hours per night helps the brain eliminate harmful substances, strengthens the immune system, and reduces inflammation.

Light daily physical activity—even simple arm and leg movements while seated—can also bring clear benefits to cardiovascular health and the musculoskeletal system.

Beyond physical health, Mr. Mizuno keeps his mind active by following the news, listening to sports broadcasts, and staying connected with the world around him. For him, healthy living is not just about the body, but also about mental clarity and daily joy.

The nutritional value of bananas and yogurt for health

Mr. Mizuno’s story shows that the secret to longevity does not lie in complicated routines, but begins with balanced eating, proper rest, and a calm, peaceful state of mind.

Bananas are rich in potassium, which helps regulate blood pressure, supports heart function, and reduces the risk of stroke. They also contain vitamin B6, vitamin C, and dietary fiber, which aid digestion, maintain stable energy levels, and help reduce fatigue—making them especially suitable for older adults.

Yogurt stands out for its probiotic content, which helps balance gut microbiota, boost immunity, and improve nutrient absorption.
In addition, yogurt is rich in calcium and protein, contributing to stronger bones and joints and reducing the risk of osteoporosis, a common concern among the elderly.

Combining bananas and yogurt in a daily diet is not only simple and affordable, but also offers long-term health benefits, making it an easy habit for anyone seeking a healthier, longer life.
