5 Signs That Your Kid.neys Are Weak, You Should See a Doctor Immediately
1. Changes in Urin.ation Fre.quency and Volume
Changes in urination habits are a clear sign of kid.ney problems. Weak kidneys reduce the ability to concentrate urine. As a result, the frequency of urination increases, even if you haven't consumed a lot of fluids.
Severe kidney damage may reduce urine output or even stop it altogether. Additionally, the urine may have abnormal colors, such as dark, blood-stained, foamy, or a strong ammonia odor. These are signs of urinary tract infections, kidney stones, or other kidney issues.
Conditions like diabetes, prostate enlargement, and pregnancy can also cause changes in urination habits.
If you notice any abnormal signs in your urination, you should see a doctor to identify the underlying issue.
2. Swelling (Edema)
When kidney function weakens, the body cannot eliminate excess fluids, leading to swelling (edema). Swelling caused by kidney weakness is often accompanied by symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and loss of appetite.
If not treated in time, edema can spread and cause serious complications. Swelling due to kidney failure typically occurs in areas like the ankles and feet (often worse in the morning or after standing/sitting for long periods); hands (swollen fingers making movement difficult); and face (swelling around the eyes).
3. Back Pain
Back pain can be a sign of various conditions, including kidney disease. Kidney-related back pain is different from back pain caused by spinal degeneration or herniated discs. If back pain is frequent and accompanied by other kidney-related symptoms, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
Kidney-related back pain typically manifests in the lower back, near the spine, close to the kidney area. The pain may be dull or severe, and pressing on the lower back can increase the pain, which may radiate to the groin or legs. Other symptoms may include fever, nausea, vomiting, frequent urination, and painful urination.
4. Fatigue and Lack of Energy
The kidneys produce erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone that stimulates red blood cell production. When kidney function declines, EPO levels drop, leading to anemia, which causes symptoms such as fatigue, exhaustion even after adequate rest, memory problems, difficulty concentrating, pale skin, dizziness, and headaches.
Fatigue due to kidney weakness is persistent and does not improve with rest.
If you experience prolonged, unexplained fatigue, you should get a health checkup.
5. Itching and Discomfort
Weakened kidneys result in the accumulation of toxins in the body, which can cause discomfort and itching all over the body, especially on the back, where many nerves are concentrated. When the kidneys fail, these toxins stimulate the nerves, leading to itching.
Kidney failure can also lead to itching in the abdomen due to fluid buildup or on the limbs.
Itching caused by kidney weakness is often prolonged, intense, and difficult to control. Using moisturizers or antihistamines typically won't relieve the discomfort in such cases.
