A 56-Year-Old Man Was Diagnosed With Colorectal Can.cer After Having a Bowel Movement Only Once a Day: Doctor Warns These 6 Symptoms May Be Early Signs
Persistent bowel changes may be an early warning sign that shouldn't be ignored.
Many people assume that having one bowel movement a day automatically means their digestive system is healthy. However, doctors say that bowel habits should be evaluated together with other symptoms, not by frequency alone. A recent case involving a 56-year-old man highlights why persistent changes in bowel habits should never be ignored.
According to the report, the man had always believed he was in good health. He exercised regularly, maintained an active lifestyle, and generally had one bowel movement each day. However, he gradually noticed that passing stool became increasingly difficult. He often felt as though his bowels were not completely empty, needed to strain more during bowel movements, and occasionally noticed blood on the toilet paper.
At first, he assumed the symptoms were caused by hemorrhoids or temporary digestive problems. As the discomfort persisted and gradually worsened, he decided to seek medical attention. After a series of examinations, doctors diagnosed him with colorectal can.cer.
Although this is only one individual case, medical experts emphasize that colorectal can.cer often develops silently in its early stages. Recognizing warning signs and seeking timely medical evaluation can improve the chances of early diagnosis and treatment.
Six Symptoms That May Be Early Warning Signs
1. Iron-Deficiency Anemia
Slow, unnoticed bleeding from the colon can gradually lead to iron-deficiency anemia. Symptoms may include fatigue, weakness, dizziness, pale skin, and shortness of breath.
2. Changes in Bowel Habits
Persistent constipation, diarrhea, narrower-than-usual stools, or a noticeable change in bowel frequency lasting several weeks should not be ignored, especially if there is no obvious explanation.
3. Blood in the Stool
Blood may appear bright red or dark, depending on where the bleeding occurs. Any unexplained rectal bleeding should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
4. Persistent Fatigue
Ongoing tiredness that does not improve with rest may be associated with chronic blood loss or other underlying health conditions.
5. Abdominal Pain or Bloating
Persistent abdominal discomfort, cramping, bloating, or unexplained fullness may occur as the disease progresses.
6. Persistent Abdominal Distension
A feeling of swelling or pressure in the abdomen, particularly when accompanied by changes in bowel habits, may require further medical investigation.
Don't Ignore Ongoing Symptoms
Doctors stress that these symptoms do not necessarily mean someone has colorectal can.cer. Many benign conditions—including hemorrhoids, irritable bowel syndrome, infections, or inflammatory bowel disease—can produce similar symptoms. However, persistent or worsening symptoms should always be evaluated rather than ignored.
Adults over 45 years old, individuals with a family history of colorectal can.cer, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, smoking, or certain lifestyle risk factors may benefit from regular colorectal screening based on their healthcare provider's recommendations.
Maintaining a healthy diet rich in fiber, staying physically active, limiting processed meats, avoiding smoking, and participating in recommended screening programs are important steps that may help reduce the risk of colorectal disease.
If you experience persistent rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, ongoing abdominal pain, or significant changes in bowel habits, it is important to consult a qualified healthcare professional promptly for an accurate diagnosis.
