A Breathing Exercise That Helps Chronic Insomniacs Fall Asleep in Just One Minute

Getting a good night’s sleep is essential for maintaining overall health. However, many people struggle to fall asleep easily, which significantly impacts their sleep quality.

It’s well-known that insufficient sleep increases the risk of life-threatening diseases. A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association tracked the sleep patterns of 1,654 adults over eight years. The study found that adults with high blood pressure or diabetes who slept less than six hours a night had twice the risk of dying from heart disease or stroke compared to those who slept longer. Additionally, those with heart disease or stroke who slept less than six hours per night faced triple the risk of dying from cancer.

Professor Julio Fernandez-Mendoza, the study's author, stated, "Achieving normal sleep can help you avoid these risks."

Despite understanding the importance of sufficient sleep, some individuals find it nearly impossible to get a good night’s rest. Often, this is because their minds are too “busy” with thoughts, such as tomorrow’s to-do list, making it hard to relax and fall asleep.

Is There a Way to Fall Asleep Easily Each Night?

The 4-7-8 breathing technique can be an effective tool for relaxation and improving sleep. While it’s not a cure-all for sleep issues, it helps calm the mind and reduce anxiety, enabling you to drift off more quickly.

What Is the 4-7-8 Breathing Technique?

The 4-7-8 breathing technique originates from yoga practices and was popularized by Dr. Andrew Weil, director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. Also known as the "relaxation breath," this method focuses on controlled breathing to alleviate stress and anxiety.

How to Perform the 4-7-8 Breathing Technique

The technique involves a specific counting pattern: inhale for 4 counts, hold your breath for 7 counts, and exhale for 8 counts.

Here are six simple steps to practice the 4-7-8 technique:

  1. Sit with your back straight.
  2. Place the tip of your tongue against the back of your upper front teeth and keep it there throughout the exercise.
  3. Exhale fully through your mouth, making a whooshing sound as the air leaves.
  4. Close your mouth and inhale slowly through your nose while mentally counting to 4.
  5. Hold your breath and count to 7.
  6. Exhale forcefully through your mouth for a count of 8, making the whooshing sound again.

Dr. Andrew Weil explained on Very Well Mind that practicing this exercise regularly can help restore a natural breathing rhythm. He also recommends exhaling longer than inhaling and practicing this technique at least twice daily. Once accustomed, you can gradually increase to eight cycles per session.

How Does the 4-7-8 Technique Aid Sleep?

The 4-7-8 breathing technique helps individuals focus on their breathing instead of worrying about why they can’t fall asleep. This method is described as a natural sedative that reduces stress on the nervous system, helping even chronic insomniacs fall asleep within a minute.

By activating the parasympathetic nervous system, this technique promotes deep relaxation, making it easier to achieve restful sleep. If you feel stressed or anxious before bedtime, practicing the 4-7-8 breathing method can help soothe your emotions and prepare your body for sleep.
