A stroke is often described as something that happens without warning. One moment, a person may feel completely normal; the next, they may suddenly have difficulty speaking, weakness on one side of the body, or trouble walking.

And while stroke symptoms typically begin suddenly, there are situations in which warning episodes can occur beforehand. One important example is a transient ischemic attack (TIA), sometimes called a “mini-stroke.” A TIA can cause stroke-like symptoms that disappear after a short time, but it should never be ignored because it can be a warning that a more serious stroke may follow.

The key is knowing what symptoms require immediate action.

Here are 10 warning signs you should recognize, along with what they may mean and when emergency help is needed.

1. Sudden Numbness or Weakness on One Side

One of the most important warning signs of a stroke is sudden weakness or numbness, particularly affecting the face, arm, or leg on one side of the body.

A person might suddenly notice that one hand feels weak or that they cannot lift one arm normally.

Sometimes the sensation is described as tingling or numbness rather than complete loss of strength.

The important word is sudden.

If one side of the body suddenly becomes weak or numb, don't assume that the problem will simply disappear.

It could be a sign that blood flow to part of the brain has been interrupted.

2. A Sudden Drooping Face

Ask the person to smile.

Does one side of the face appear to droop?

Is the smile suddenly uneven?

A facial droop can be an important stroke warning sign, particularly when it appears together with weakness in an arm or difficulty speaking.

The change may be subtle at first.

Someone might simply look as though one side of their mouth isn't moving normally.

Because stroke treatment is highly time-sensitive, even a seemingly small change should be taken seriously when it appears suddenly.

3. Sudden Difficulty Speaking

Another major warning sign is a sudden change in speech.

A person may:

  • Slur their words

  • Have trouble finding the right words

  • Say something that doesn't make sense

  • Have difficulty understanding what others are saying

  • Suddenly become unable to speak normally

Sometimes the person knows exactly what they want to say but cannot get the words out.

Other times, their speech may sound normal to them even though the words are confused.

Sudden speech or language problems can indicate that areas of the brain responsible for communication are being affected.

Don't wait to see whether speech returns to normal.

4. Sudden Trouble Seeing

Stroke can also affect vision.

A person may suddenly experience:

  • Blurred vision

  • Double vision

  • Loss of vision in one eye

  • Loss of part of their visual field

  • Difficulty seeing clearly

These symptoms can occur in one or both eyes depending on the underlying problem.

Sudden vision loss should always be taken seriously.

It can have causes other than stroke, but because some causes require urgent treatment, it is not something to simply monitor at home.

5. Sudden Severe Headache

A sudden, severe headache can sometimes accompany a stroke, particularly certain types of hemorrhagic stroke.

People may describe it as an unusually intense headache that comes on rapidly.

It may be accompanied by:

  • Vomiting

  • Neck stiffness

  • Confusion

  • Loss of consciousness

  • Weakness

  • Vision problems

A severe headache does not automatically mean someone is having a stroke.

Migraines and other conditions can cause intense headaches.

However, a sudden, severe, unusual headache, especially when accompanied by neurological symptoms, requires urgent medical evaluation.

6. Sudden Dizziness or Loss of Balance

Another possible warning sign is sudden difficulty with balance or coordination.

A person may suddenly feel as though the room is spinning.

They may stumble while walking or have trouble standing.

They may also experience difficulty coordinating their movements.

This can be particularly concerning when dizziness occurs together with other neurological symptoms such as weakness, numbness, double vision or speech difficulty.

Not all dizziness is caused by stroke. Inner-ear disorders, dehydration, low blood pressure and other conditions can produce similar sensations.

But new and sudden neurological symptoms should not be dismissed.

7. Sudden Difficulty Walking

A person who suddenly struggles to walk normally may be experiencing a neurological emergency.

They might:

  • Suddenly stumble

  • Drag one leg

  • Have difficulty coordinating their steps

  • Feel unusually weak

  • Become unable to walk without assistance

If the walking problem appears suddenly, especially when combined with dizziness, weakness, speech difficulty or vision changes, immediate medical attention is necessary.

Don't assume that someone is simply tired or having a minor balance problem.

8. Sudden Confusion

Stroke can affect the brain's ability to process information.

A person may suddenly become confused or disoriented.

They may not understand simple questions.

They may struggle to follow a familiar conversation.

They might appear unusually confused about where they are or what is happening.

Sudden confusion can also have many other causes, including infections, low blood sugar, medication effects and other medical emergencies.

But when confusion develops suddenly, it should be evaluated urgently.

9. A Sudden Loss of Coordination

Sudden problems with coordination can sometimes be overlooked.

For example, someone who normally handles objects easily may suddenly begin dropping things.

They may have trouble using one hand.

They may be unable to perform simple movements accurately.

They could suddenly struggle to coordinate their arms and legs while walking.

When a sudden loss of coordination appears alongside other neurological symptoms, stroke should be considered as one possible cause.

10. Stroke-Like Symptoms That Disappear

This is one of the most important signs to understand.

Sometimes a person experiences symptoms such as:

  • Facial drooping

  • Arm weakness

  • Speech difficulty

  • Vision problems

  • Numbness

  • Sudden dizziness

Then, after several minutes or a short period of time, everything appears to return to normal.
