If you experience palpitations along with:

  • Fainting

  • Severe dizziness

  • Chest pain

  • Significant shortness of breath

  • A sustained or very irregular heartbeat

you should seek medical evaluation.

8. Sleeping on Your Right Side Doesn't "Crush" Your Heart

Another common internet claim suggests that sleeping on the right side somehow protects the heart while sleeping on the left puts dangerous pressure on it.

This is an oversimplification.

Your heart is protected by the rib cage and surrounded by tissues within the chest.

Simply lying on your side doesn't crush or damage a healthy heart.

In fact, some people notice their heartbeat more strongly on the left side because of the heart's location within the chest.

Others may simply find one side more comfortable than the other.

The sensation of a stronger heartbeat isn't automatically evidence of a problem.

What matters is whether you're experiencing symptoms such as persistent chest discomfort, fainting, significant shortness of breath, or unexplained palpitations.

9. Your Right Shoulder May Take More Pressure

If you always sleep on your right side, one area that can experience repeated pressure is your right shoulder.

Your body weight rests partly on the shoulder and upper arm.

For many people, this causes no problem.

But if you already have:

  • Shoulder bursitis

  • Tendon irritation

  • Rotator cuff problems

  • Arthritis

  • A recent shoulder injury

sleeping directly on that side may aggravate symptoms.

You may notice pain when you wake up or discomfort when raising your arm.

If this happens, you don't necessarily need to stop side sleeping altogether.

Instead, experiment with your position.

Try rotating slightly toward your back rather than putting all your weight directly on the shoulder.

A supportive pillow can also help prevent the shoulder from being compressed in an awkward position.

10. Your Hip Can Also Feel the Pressure

The shoulder isn't the only joint affected by side sleeping.

Your outer hip can also bear pressure when you sleep on one side for several hours.
