An unusual lump or bump appears on the wrist: Don't ignore it, as it could be a warning sign of a serious illness
Suddenly, a strange lump appears on your hand — soft to the touch — but don’t be careless, as it could cause problems.
Have you ever woken up in shock to find a swollen bump on your wrist, knee, or ankle?
You might think it’s an insect bite or a result of bumping into something yesterday that you don’t remember, only to find the lump appearing on your hand or foot after sleeping. The lump can feel either hard or soft, almost spongy.
The lump is usually soft, 1–3 cm in diameter, and fixed in place.
But it’s not that simple — these unusual lumps can be a symptom of a serious medical condition!
A lump on the wrist — a sign of an “unusual” disease
Experts warn that you should not ignore any sudden bumps that appear on your body, especially on your wrists or ankles.
It could be a sign of a condition called Hygroma — also known as a ganglion cyst. When it appears on the wrist, it’s specifically called a wrist joint ganglion cyst.
This lump forms over a joint or tendon — the tissue that connects your bones. It looks like a fluid-filled sac containing clear fluid. Depending on the size, it can feel hard or soft and spongy.
The raised lump looks like a fluid-filled sac.
Each lump can be as small as a marble or coin, but sometimes larger. They usually appear on the back of the wrist joint, but occasionally show up on the palm side.
Why does this lump appear?
Medical experts say these cysts are generally benign and result from looseness in the joint capsule (often due to injury or sprain), which allows joint fluid to escape and form a ganglion cyst.
Another cause is repetitive wrist movements. For example, people who work long hours on computers or type extensively are at higher risk of developing this condition.
Although doctors consider ganglion cysts benign, over time they can still affect your health and mental well-being. First, they may cause cosmetic concerns, making you self-conscious or hesitant to interact with others because you think the lump is “abnormal.”
Next, it can lead to complications. Small cysts may hide under the skin, but when they grow, they can press on surrounding structures like tendons, muscles, or nerves — causing pain, tingling, and limiting wrist movement.
In more serious cases, if the cyst attaches to a tendon, you may feel weakness in your hand and fingers.
Additionally, if the cyst ruptures due to trauma or becomes infected, it can spread into the joint, causing unpredictable complications.
For these reasons, experts recommend that when you notice an unusual lump on your hand, you should see a doctor for evaluation and treatment. Typically, these cysts can be removed with a relatively simple procedure.
At the same time, you should maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle and avoid overusing your joints to prevent worsening of the condition.
