Chapter 1: When a Bruise Appears Out of Nowhere

Bruises occur when small blood vessels beneath the skin break and leak blood into surrounding tissues. Most people develop bruises after bumping into furniture, participating in sports, or experiencing minor injuries. In these situations, the cause is usually obvious.

However, some people notice bruises appearing without remembering any injury. A dark purple or blue mark may suddenly appear on the arm, leg, or torso, creating understandable concern. Although unexplained bruising does not automatically indicate a serious illness, it should not be ignored if it becomes frequent or severe.

Age can play a role. As people grow older, the skin becomes thinner and blood vessels become more fragile, making bruising more common. Certain medications may also contribute, including blood thinners, aspirin, corticosteroids, and some anti-inflammatory drugs.

Nutritional deficiencies can also affect the body's ability to maintain healthy blood vessels. Low levels of vitamin C, vitamin K, or iron may increase the likelihood of bruising.

The most important factor is paying attention to patterns. A single unexplained bruise is often not a cause for alarm. Repeated bruising, larger bruises, or bruises accompanied by other symptoms may warrant medical evaluation.

Understanding the difference between normal bruising and unusual bruising is the first step toward protecting overall health.
