Chapter 2: Signs That Deserve Closer Attention

Healthcare professionals often recommend monitoring bruises that appear unusually large, painful, or frequent. Several characteristics may deserve closer attention.

One concern is bruises that develop repeatedly without any known injury. Another is bruising in unusual locations, such as the abdomen, back, or face, especially when no trauma has occurred.

Bruises that take an unusually long time to heal may also be worth discussing with a healthcare provider. Most bruises gradually change color and fade over several weeks. When healing seems unusually slow, further evaluation may be appropriate.

Some individuals experience additional symptoms alongside bruising. These may include persistent fatigue, frequent infections, unexplained weight loss, prolonged bleeding from minor cuts, or recurring nosebleeds.

Tiny red or purple spots under the skin, known as petechiae, can also appear when small blood vessels leak. While these spots can occur for various reasons, their presence alongside unexplained bruising may require medical assessment.

It is important to remember that many conditions can contribute to these symptoms. Infections, medication effects, nutritional deficiencies, autoimmune disorders, and blood-related conditions are only a few possibilities.
