Best Placement for an Air Conditioner in the Bedroom: Many Have Been Getting It Wrong!
Choosing the right spot to install an air conditioner may seem simple, but not everyone knows the best answer.

During hot summer days, cooling devices become essential, and while electric fans are common, air conditioners provide more effective and efficient cooling. Despite their widespread use, many people still overlook important details about their installation, particularly in the bedroom.
So, where is the best place to install an air conditioner to maximize cooling efficiency while ensuring user comfort and health? Here’s what experts recommend.
Expert Advice on AC Placement
A seasoned architect, certified by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and with extensive experience in architecture, has shared insights in a widely viewed video on the best placement for an air conditioner in a bedroom.
In the video, he simulates various common installation spots—such as at the foot of the bed, directly opposite the bed, or above the headboard—but concludes that none of these are ideal.
Instead, the best position is still near the head of the bed, but slightly to the left or right rather than directly above. “This placement ensures comfort, similar to what most hotels adopt,” he explains.
This positioning allows the cool air to circulate evenly throughout the room while avoiding direct airflow onto a person’s face or body, which could cause discomfort or even health issues.
The Common Misconception About Direct Airflow
Many people mistakenly believe that placing the AC directly in front of them for immediate cooling is the best approach. However, experts warn that direct exposure to cold air—especially while sleeping—can have negative health effects, particularly for children, the elderly, or individuals with weak immune systems.
Yu Chang Zhen, an air conditioning expert with over seven years of experience, states on Aircondlounge.com:
"It may feel refreshing at first because of the strong airflow, but having cold air blow directly on you while sleeping does more harm than good. It can lead to excessive cold exposure, dry lips, dry skin, dry eyes, and even headaches upon waking up. This happens because the AC accelerates the loss of body heat and moisture. In the long run, your sleep quality and overall health will suffer."
He recalls:
"As a child, I remember the AC blowing directly on my face all night. It was unbearable—I had to cover my face with a blanket or change my sleeping position to escape the cold breeze. The constant cold air hitting my face was extremely uncomfortable."
The Best AC Placement for Bedrooms
Based on expert recommendations, the optimal placement for an air conditioner in a bedroom is:
โ
Near the head of the bed, but slightly offset to the left or right.
โ
An alternative good location is on the side wall near the foot of the bed.
If your AC is already installed in an unsuitable position, you may want to consider adjusting it. This advice not only applies to bedrooms but also to other spaces like living rooms and offices—air conditioners should never be placed where they blow cold air directly onto a person’s face, head, or body.
