Can a plane in the sky be struck by lightning? Are the passengers inside safe?

Is it dangerous when a plane gets struck by lightning?

No, airplanes are not affected by thunder and lightning strikes during flight. On average, an aircraft that flies about 3,000 hours is struck by lightning once. However, lightning does not impact the aircraft during flight.

Experts explain that airplanes are designed to withstand the effects of lightning strikes. The outer shell of the cabin and the interior are made to conduct electricity while also isolating the electrical current from the crew, passengers, and onboard electronic systems.

Aircraft are also equipped with a metallic mesh inside the fuselage, which prevents the external current from penetrating deeply and helps redirect it.

Furthermore, the airplane's body is layered with shielding to protect the aircraft from short circuits caused by external impacts. Every component of the aircraft is thoroughly inspected before operation to ensure safety.

Tips for flying that you should know:

To ensure a safe and comfortable flight, passengers who have purchased tickets should prepare well and arrive at the airport about 20–30 minutes before boarding time.

If you have sinusitis, use a nasal spray before boarding. Even healthy individuals are advised to do some light stretching or walking around the airport before takeoff. Cabin pressure can reduce the oxygen level in the air and lower humidity, which may cause dry nasal passages.

It is important to follow rules about limiting phone usage on the plane. When asked to turn off your phone, please comply to ensure the safety of everyone onboard.

Do not touch any aircraft equipment without permission. This includes life vests, emergency exits, oxygen masks, fire extinguishers, and other devices. Wait until the flight crew gives you instructions before using them.

During the flight, avoid consuming alcohol. If the crew detects that you are intoxicated or have a high blood alcohol level, you may be denied transportation to ensure the safety of all passengers.
