5. Unusual Nipple Discharge

Nipple discharge is not always a sign of cancer.

In fact, discharge can occur for many reasons.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are obvious examples, but hormonal changes, medications, infections, and certain benign breast conditions can also cause discharge.

What matters is the pattern.

Discharge that is:

New

Persistent

Occurring without squeezing or stimulation

Coming from only one breast

or

Containing blood

should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Not All Discharge Looks the Same

Nipple discharge may be clear, milky, yellowish, greenish, or bloody.

The color by itself does not establish a diagnosis.

For example, bloody discharge can have benign causes, but it warrants evaluation because it can sometimes occur with an abnormal growth or another breast condition.

A doctor may ask when the discharge began, whether it comes from one or both breasts, whether it occurs spontaneously, and whether there are any other symptoms such as a lump or nipple changes.

That information can help guide further investigation.

6. Persistent Redness, Warmth, or Swelling

A breast that suddenly becomes red, warm, swollen, or painful can have an infection.

Mastitis, for example, is particularly common during breastfeeding, although breast inflammation can occur in other circumstances as well.

But persistent redness and swelling should not always be assumed to be an infection.

One reason is that inflammatory breast cancer can sometimes resemble an infection.

This is a relatively uncommon type of breast cancer that can cause rapid changes in the appearance of the breast, including redness, swelling, warmth, and skin thickening.

Why Follow-Up Matters

Suppose someone is treated for what appears to be a breast infection but the symptoms do not improve as expected.

That persistence is important.

It may mean the original diagnosis needs to be reconsidered.

This does not mean every case of redness or swelling is cancer.

Far from it.

But when a symptom does not behave as expected or continues despite appropriate treatment, additional evaluation may be needed.

7. Persistent Breast or Nipple Pain

Pain is one of the most confusing breast symptoms.

Many people assume that breast cancer must cause pain.

Others hear that breast cancer is usually painless and therefore believe any painful breast change cannot be serious.

Neither assumption is reliable.

Breast pain is extremely common and is often related to benign causes such as hormonal changes, cysts, muscle strain, trauma, poorly fitting bras, or certain medications.

For many people, discomfort changes with the menstrual cycle.

But persistent or unexplained pain deserves attention, particularly if it occurs in one specific area and is accompanied by another breast change.

Pain Alone Is Usually Not Enough to Diagnose Anything

This is an important distinction.

Pain by itself is not a reliable test for breast cancer.

A person should not look at breast pain and conclude either:

“It must be cancer.”

or:

“It cannot possibly be cancer.”

Instead, consider the whole picture.

If pain persists, worsens, or occurs together with a lump, nipple change, skin change, swelling, or other unexplained symptom, speaking with a healthcare professional is appropriate.

8. Swelling Around the Armpit or Collarbone

Sometimes a breast-related problem becomes noticeable not in the breast itself, but near the underarm or collarbone.

The lymphatic system is connected to the breast, and lymph nodes are located in the armpit and around the collarbone.

Swollen lymph nodes are often caused by infections and other benign conditions.

However, a new, persistent, or unexplained lump in the armpit can sometimes be associated with breast disease.

In some cases, people discover an underarm lump before noticing any obvious change in the breast.

That is why an unexplained swelling in this region should not automatically be dismissed.

Again, it does not mean cancer is present.

The purpose of evaluation is to determine what the lump actually represents.

Why Breast Cancer Can Be Difficult to Recognize Early

One reason breast health can be complicated is that symptoms overlap.
