Did You Know? Chicken Gizzards Are Packed With Nutrients — But There’s More to Know
Chicken gizzards may not be the first food that comes to mind when you think about nutritious meals. In fact, many people overlook them completely. But this inexpensive organ meat can provide high-quality protein, vitamin B12, iron, zinc, selenium, and other important nutrients.
That said, the claim that eating chicken gizzards means you “don’t have to take” certain supplements is too broad. Food can provide essential nutrients, but whether someone needs a supplement depends on their diet, age, health status, medications, and laboratory results.
So, what makes chicken gizzards interesting—and what should you know before adding them to your meals?
1. Chicken Gizzards Are Surprisingly High in Protein
One of the biggest nutritional advantages of chicken gizzards is their protein content.
Protein is essential for maintaining and repairing muscles, supporting the immune system, producing enzymes and hormones, and maintaining many tissues throughout the body.
For people trying to build meals around nutrient-dense foods, gizzards can be a relatively affordable way to increase protein intake.
They can also be quite filling, especially when paired with vegetables, beans, whole grains, or other high-fiber foods.
A serving of properly cooked chicken gizzards can contribute meaningful protein without requiring an expensive cut of meat.
2. They Provide Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient involved in red blood cell production, DNA synthesis, and normal nervous-system function.
Animal foods are among the major dietary sources of vitamin B12, and organ meats can be particularly nutrient-dense.
Including foods such as chicken gizzards in a varied diet can therefore help contribute to your overall B12 intake.
However, this does not mean everyone who eats gizzards can stop taking a B12 supplement.
People who have been diagnosed with B12 deficiency, have absorption problems, take certain medications, or follow diets with little or no animal food may still require supplementation under medical guidance.
3. They Can Be a Source of Iron
Iron is another important nutrient found in chicken gizzards.
Your body needs iron to make hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body.
Too little iron can contribute to iron-deficiency anemia, which may cause symptoms such as:
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Shortness of breath
- Reduced exercise tolerance
Because gizzards contain iron, they can be useful as part of a balanced diet.
But once again, eating an iron-containing food is not the same thing as treating iron deficiency. If blood tests show that you are deficient, the appropriate treatment depends on the underlying cause and may involve iron supplementation prescribed or recommended by a healthcare professional.
4. Zinc Supports Normal Immune Function
Chicken gizzards also contain zinc, a mineral involved in immune function, wound healing, DNA synthesis, and normal growth and development.
Getting enough zinc through food is generally preferable to taking high-dose supplements without a specific reason.
Too much supplemental zinc can actually interfere with copper absorption and cause other problems.
This is a good example of why “more” does not automatically mean “better” when it comes to nutrients.
A varied diet containing meat, seafood, dairy products, legumes, nuts, and seeds can provide zinc in different amounts.
5. Selenium Is Another Nutrient They Provide
Selenium is required in relatively small amounts, but it plays important roles in thyroid function, antioxidant defense, and immune function.
Chicken gizzards can contribute selenium to the diet along with other foods such as fish, eggs, meat, and certain nuts.
Because selenium requirements are relatively low, there is generally no reason to consume very large amounts simply because a food contains it.
Balanced intake matters more than chasing individual nutrients.
6. Chicken Gizzards Are Relatively Affordable
Nutrition isn't only about vitamins and minerals. Cost matters too.
Many nutrient-dense foods can become difficult to include regularly when food prices are high. Chicken gizzards are often less expensive than premium cuts of meat, making them an interesting option for budget-conscious households.
They can be:
- Stir-fried with vegetables
- Added to soups
- Grilled
- Braised
- Cooked with rice
- Used in stews
Their firm, chewy texture is distinctive, so cooking them properly is important.
7. They Aren't a “Miracle Food”
This is probably the most important point.
Social-media posts sometimes make claims suggesting that a particular food can replace supplements, medications, or medical treatment.
Chicken gizzards are nutritious, but they are not a cure-all.
