Not every stroke produces obvious facial drooping or weakness in an arm. Depending on which part of the brain is affected, symptoms may involve vision, balance, coordination, or headache.

Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes, blurred vision, or double vision can sometimes indicate a serious neurological problem. A sudden inability to walk normally, severe imbalance, or unexplained loss of coordination may also be associated with a stroke, particularly when other neurological symptoms occur.

A sudden, extremely severe headache that reaches maximum intensity rapidly can signal bleeding in or around the brain. This is a medical emergency, even if weakness or speech problems are absent.

Dizziness alone is common and has many possible causes, including inner-ear disorders, dehydration, and medication effects. Nevertheless, sudden severe dizziness accompanied by difficulty walking, double vision, weakness, or speech changes requires emergency evaluation.

It is impossible to determine the cause of these symptoms from a photograph or a list of symptoms alone. Doctors may need to perform a neurological examination, brain imaging, blood tests, and other investigations to establish the diagnosis.

The most important principle is to focus on how symptoms begin. Sudden, unusual neurological changes deserve immediate attention, particularly when they differ from a person's normal health.

Never assume that a severe headache, sudden vision disturbance, or unexpected balance problem is harmless simply because the person is young or has no known history of cardiovascular disease.
