Doctors Warn: 4 Common Mistakes When Cooking Eggs That May Increase the Risk of Foodborne Illness
Safe egg handling and cooking can help protect your family from food poisoning.
Not every egg dish is equally healthy—preparation methods matter most.
Eggs are widely recognized as one of the most nutritious foods available. Rich in high-quality protein, vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats, they are a staple in many households. However, health experts emphasize that while eggs themselves are nutritious, certain preparation methods may reduce their health benefits or increase potential health risks.
Doctors and nutrition specialists warn that some popular egg dishes, when consumed frequently or prepared improperly, may expose the body to harmful bacteria, excessive sodium, unhealthy fats, or potentially carcinogenic compounds. Here are three types of egg dishes experts recommend enjoying in moderation.
Many people enjoy soft-boiled eggs, runny yolks, or even raw eggs mixed into certain recipes. While these preparations preserve a creamy texture, they may also carry health risks if the eggs are contaminated.
According to food safety experts, raw or undercooked eggs can sometimes contain Salmonella, a bacterium capable of causing food poisoning. Symptoms may include diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Young children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable.
Another concern is that raw egg whites contain avidin, a protein that can interfere with the absorption of biotin (vitamin B7) when consumed regularly in large amounts. Cooking eggs thoroughly greatly reduces this effect while also helping eliminate harmful bacteria.
Experts recommend cooking eggs until both the white and yolk are fully set to improve food safety.
Salted eggs and soy-marinated eggs are popular in many Asian cuisines because of their rich flavor and long shelf life. However, these products often contain very high amounts of sodium.
Excessive sodium intake may contribute to elevated blood pressure, increased fluid retention, and greater strain on the kidneys over time. People with hypertension, kidney disease, or cardiovascular conditions should be especially mindful of portion sizes.
While enjoying these dishes occasionally is generally acceptable for most healthy individuals, experts recommend balancing them with fresh vegetables, fruits, and lower-sodium foods throughout the day.
Deep-fried eggs or eggs cooked in large amounts of very hot oil can absorb considerable amounts of fat during cooking. Frequent consumption of heavily fried foods may increase calorie intake and contribute to weight gain if not balanced within an overall healthy diet.
Cooking oils that are repeatedly overheated may also produce undesirable compounds, while extremely high cooking temperatures can reduce some heat-sensitive nutrients naturally present in eggs.
Nutritionists generally recommend healthier cooking methods such as boiling, poaching, steaming, or lightly scrambling eggs with minimal oil. These methods help preserve nutritional value while limiting unnecessary fat.
Eggs remain an excellent source of complete protein and many essential nutrients. The key is not avoiding eggs altogether but preparing them safely and balancing them within a varied diet.
For most healthy adults, moderate egg consumption can be part of a nutritious eating pattern. Choosing fresh eggs, storing them properly, cooking them thoroughly when appropriate, and limiting heavily salted or deep-fried preparations can help maximize the benefits while minimizing potential risks.
