Chapter 2: A Disturbing Discovery Inside the Intestines
During the investigation, doctors would need to consider several possible causes of severe abdominal symptoms. One potential explanation is a heavy infestation of intestinal roundworms, particularly Ascaris lumbricoides, a parasitic worm that can live in the human digestive tract.
Infections involving large numbers of these worms can sometimes cause a mass of tangled parasites inside the intestines. This complication, known as intestinal obstruction, can prevent food and digestive contents from moving normally through the bowel.
When an obstruction develops, patients may experience abdominal swelling, severe pain, nausea, and repeated vomiting. Without prompt treatment, the condition can become life-threatening.
