Soaking the fryer basket in a baking soda solution helps soften stubborn grease, making it easier to scrub off. Then, wipe it again with white vinegar to deodorize and disinfect.

In recent years, air fryers have become an essential and well-loved kitchen appliance thanks to their convenience and ability to cook delicious food without much oil. However, according to Express, that convenience comes with one important responsibility — keeping the air fryer clean. If it’s not cleaned regularly and thoroughly, it can start to smell, lose efficiency, harbor bacteria, and negatively affect both food flavor and your health.

Microbiology expert Salomé Gião explains that the fryer basket is the main point of contact with food, so it must be washed with soap after every use. Even if you use aluminum liners, leftover food particles and grease in the drip tray or basket can still become a breeding ground for bacteria.

In addition to cleaning after every use, Salomé recommends doing a deeper clean every 2–4 weeks with the following steps:

  • Mix baking soda with a little hot water to form a paste. Apply it to greasy areas inside the air fryer. You can also soak the inner pot with baking soda solution for about 30 minutes or run a heating cycle to help soften stuck-on residue.

  • Use a non-scratch sponge to remove buildup without damaging the nonstick coating.

  • Mix white vinegar with dish soap in a bowl or spray bottle, then use the solution to wipe down the inside of the fryer and all removable parts.

  • Rinse all parts with warm or hot water, then let everything dry completely before reassembling.
