Coconut water should therefore be consumed as a normal beverage rather than treated like a product that needs to be taken in large quantities for maximum health benefits.
A balanced approach is much more sensible.
9. Check the Label on Packaged Coconut Water
Not every coconut-water product is identical.
Some contain only coconut water.
Others may contain:
- Added sugar
- Flavorings
- Fruit juice
- Sodium
- Preservatives or other ingredients
If you're trying to choose a lower-sugar option, read the nutrition label rather than relying on the front of the package.
Words such as “natural,” “pure,” or “healthy” don't necessarily tell you how much sugar or calories are in a serving.
Also check the serving size.
A bottle may contain two servings even though it looks like something you would drink in one sitting.
10. Fresh Coconut Water and Packaged Coconut Water Are Not Always the Same
Fresh coconut water comes directly from the coconut.
Packaged products undergo processing designed to improve shelf life and food safety.
Some products may be pasteurized or otherwise treated before packaging.
The nutritional composition can also vary depending on the coconut variety, maturity, processing method, and added ingredients.
This doesn't mean packaged coconut water is unhealthy.
It simply means that “coconut water” isn't a single nutritionally identical product.
So, Is Coconut Water Healthy?
For many healthy adults, moderate amounts of unsweetened coconut water can fit comfortably into a balanced diet.
It provides fluids and electrolytes and can be a refreshing alternative to sugary soft drinks.
But it shouldn't be viewed as a miracle beverage.
