“I know.”

Ten minutes later, he was there.

He didn't give me a speech.

He didn't tell me not to worry.

He simply sat beside me.

For hours, we said almost nothing.

But something changed that night.

Not because of some dramatic confession.

There was no confession.

Just a feeling I couldn't name.

A quiet sense that this person had become important to me in a way I wasn't ready to examine.

And because the situation was already complicated enough, I buried the thought.

I told myself it was gratitude.

Stress.

Family closeness.

Anything except what it might actually be.

The Boundaries We Tried to Protect

After my mother recovered, life gradually returned to normal.

But something between us had shifted.

Not visibly.

Not in a way anyone else could easily notice.

It was in small things.

A longer conversation.

A glance that lasted a second too long.

A message that seemed unnecessary but somehow mattered.

I began wondering about him when he wasn't around.

I'd catch myself looking forward to dinners at my mother's house.

Then I'd feel guilty for looking forward to them.

Eventually, I started avoiding him.

I told myself it was better that way.

I skipped dinners.

I answered texts more slowly.

I found excuses to leave early.

He seemed to notice.

One evening, he finally asked:

“Did I do something?”

“No.”

“You've been avoiding me.”

“I've just been busy.”

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

“Okay.”

But his voice told me he didn't believe me.

Neither did I.

We Tried to Pretend Nothing Was Happening

For a while, we both behaved as though nothing had changed.

It almost worked.

Almost.

Then one evening, my mother had to leave the room during dinner to take a phone call.

We were alone.

The silence stretched.

He looked at me.

I looked at my plate.

Finally, he said:

“We need to talk.”

My heart dropped.

“I know.”

He sighed.

“I don't know what this is.”

“Neither do I.”

“I care about you.”

The words landed heavily.

I looked up.

“That's the problem.”

He shook his head.

“No. The problem is that we both know this can't be simple.”

He was right.

There was no easy version of what we were feeling.

There was no socially comfortable explanation.

And there was one person whose feelings mattered more than anyone else's.

My mother.

She had trusted both of us.

She had built a life with him.

She had brought him into our family.

Even though I had never been a child under his care, the label alone made everything more difficult.

We couldn't pretend otherwise.

So we made a decision.

Distance.

No unnecessary messages.

No private meetings.

No emotional conversations.

No opportunities for the situation to grow.

For several months, we barely spoke.

And I discovered something I hadn't expected.

The distance didn't make the feelings disappear.

It made them clearer.

Then My Mother Found Out

I will never forget the night she confronted me.

She was sitting in the living room.

He wasn't home.

She looked at me with a sadness I had never seen in her before.

“Are you in love with him?”

My entire body went cold.

I couldn't speak.

She answered for me.

“You are.”

I sat down.

“Mom…”

She raised her hand.

“I need you to tell me the truth.”

So I did.

Not every detail.

Not every thought.

But enough.

She cried.

I had never seen her cry like that.

Not because she was angry.

Because she was hurt.

She kept asking the same question.

“How did this happen?”

I didn't know.

There wasn't a single moment I could point to.

No dramatic first kiss.

No forbidden romance from years ago.

No childhood history.

No secret relationship.

There was simply a slow accumulation of conversations, trust, vulnerability, and time.

Two adults had gotten too close.

And neither of us had planned it.

My mother stood up.

“I need time.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

That night, I went home and sat alone in my apartment.

For the first time, I wondered whether loving someone could still be wrong even if the feelings were genuine.

I had no answer.

He Considered Walking Away

A few days later, he came to see me.

He looked exhausted.

“I've been thinking,” he said.

“So have I.”

He sat across from me.
