When people focus directly on a specific section of the image, the green lines often appear perfectly straight. However, the areas outside the center of vision are processed differently. Peripheral vision captures less detail and relies more heavily on the brain’s ability to interpret patterns.
The gray shapes inside each square create visual noise. Because these shapes vary in brightness and orientation, they interfere with the brain’s ability to judge the exact position of the green lines. As a result, the visual system connects nearby patterns and mistakenly interprets them as extensions of the lines.
Researchers studying visual perception have documented similar phenomena. Certain arrangements of contrast, shape, and orientation can cause people to perceive curves, corners, or movement where none actually exist. The brain constantly attempts to simplify complex scenes, and sometimes that process creates illusions instead of accurate representations.
