Chapter 4: How to Beat the Trick
Fortunately, there are several ways to reveal the truth behind the illusion.
One method is to focus on a single green line and slowly follow it from one end to the other. As attention remains fixed on that line, the apparent curve usually disappears.
Another technique involves zooming into the image. By reducing the amount of surrounding visual information, the distracting patterns become less influential. Many viewers are surprised to discover that the line they believed was curved is actually perfectly straight.
Some people also report success by tilting their screen or viewing the image from a greater distance. These changes alter how the visual system processes the surrounding shapes and can weaken the illusion considerably.
The challenge becomes even more interesting once viewers understand the trick. Even after learning that the lines are straight, many continue to see curves when looking at the full image. Knowledge alone is not always enough to overcome the brain’s automatic processing.
