Stories about people who appear to die, survive, and later describe vivid experiences have fascinated people for decades. Some survivors of cardiac arrest report seeing bright lights, feeling an unusual sense of peace, hearing voices, remembering conversations, or describing what they believe was an experience of an “afterlife.”
But what actually happens to the brain and body during cardiac arrest? And can someone really be without a detectable pulse for 45 minutes and then wake up?
The answer is more complicated—and more fascinating—than a viral headline might suggest.
What Happens When the Heart Stops?
When the heart suddenly stops pumping effectively, blood flow to the brain and other organs falls dramatically. This condition is known as cardiac arrest.
It is different from a heart attack.
A heart attack occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle becomes blocked. A cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops pumping blood effectively, often because of an electrical problem.
Without adequate circulation, the brain is deprived of oxygen and nutrients.
Every second matters.
Emergency medical teams immediately begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use defibrillation when appropriate, provide medications, and support breathing and circulation.
The longer the brain goes without adequate blood flow, the greater the risk of permanent injury.
So How Could Someone “Lose Their Pulse” for 45 Minutes?

That does not mean that survivors are deliberately making up their experiences.
Rather, it means that there can be a difference between:
what a person sincerely remembers experiencing
and
what can be scientifically demonstrated about the external cause of that experience.
That distinction is particularly important when dramatic medical stories spread online.
Why Some Survivors Change Afterward
One of the most interesting aspects of near-death experiences is what happens after the person survives.
Some people report becoming less afraid of death. Others say they place greater importance on relationships, family, kindness, or spending meaningful time with people they love.
Some describe the experience as a major turning point in their lives.

A person who believes they encountered an afterlife may interpret the event spiritually.
Another survivor may interpret a similar experience through neuroscience.

Could Someone Actually Wake Up After Prolonged Resuscitation?
Yes, people can survive prolonged cardiac arrest in certain circumstances, although outcomes vary enormously.

Likewise, a vivid near-death experience does not by itself scientifically prove or disprove an afterlife.
What we do know is that cardiac arrest is a medical emergency in which rapid resuscitation can be lifesaving.
If someone suddenly collapses, does not respond, and is not breathing normally, emergency services should be contacted immediately. CPR should be started, and an automated external defibrillator (AED) should be used if available and appropriate.
Every minute without effective resuscitation can reduce the chances of survival.

Accounts of near-death experiences sit at an unusual intersection of emergency medicine, neuroscience, psychology, memory, and spirituality.
For survivors, these experiences may become some of the most important moments of their lives.

A dramatic story may capture attention, but the real story is often found in the medical details behind it.
Near-death experiences remain an important subject of research, and many questions are still unresolved. What is certain is that surviving cardiac arrest can be extraordinary—and that immediate medical intervention can sometimes make the difference between death, survival, and long-term neurological recovery.
