How to store grapefruit without wilting or rotting
Preserving grapefruit with sand
To preserve grapefruit for a long time, you should choose a clean, dry place and spread cardboard down. Then cover it with a layer of dry sand and arrange the grapefruit in rows.
While arranging, you should place the large fruit below and the small fruit above. Only stack in 2 layers, do not stack too much as it will cause the grapefruit on the bottom layer to be crushed.
Dry sand has good moisture absorption properties, helping you preserve the delicious flavor of grapefruit for about 4-6 months and prevent mold from rotting.
Apply lime
A simple way to preserve grapefruit is to apply lime to the grapefruit crown. Lime is a substance that helps fight bacteria because of its high alkalinity. The grapefruit crown is susceptible to bacteria that cause the fruit to rot. Therefore, instead of whitewashing the entire fruit, you only need to focus on applying lime to the grapefruit crown to kill bacteria. Then layer paper or cardboard and place the grapefruit on top. But avoid stacking many layers of grapefruit on top of each other. You should also place it in a dry corner of the house that is not wet.
Preservation with plastic bags
After picking or buying grapefruit for about 5-10 days, apply lime water to the top of the grapefruit stem. This method prevents microorganisms from entering the grapefruit from the stem down.
Then, put each grapefruit in a nylon bag and tie it tightly, avoiding contact with water and moisture. This method prevents air from contacting the grapefruit. When wrapped in a nylon bag, the grapefruit will drain water more slowly and stay fresh longer.
Use a bamboo rack to preserve grapefruit
If you have a bamboo rack at home, you can also use it to preserve grapefruit in large quantities.
Accordingly, you move the bamboo rack to a cool place, away from sunlight, and then start arranging the grapefruit on the rack. The distance between the lower and upper floors of the rack is 30cm.
This method can preserve grapefruit for about 1-2 months. However, due to environmental influences, grapefruit left for a long time (more than 2 months) will no longer retain its full flavor. Therefore, if you have preserved it on a bamboo trellis, you should enjoy the grapefruit as soon as possible!
