It is which species it is, where it was found, and whether there is an infestation.
IMAGE 1 ā Suggested placement
Use a realistic photograph of a European adult noticing a stink bug on a windowsill or near a houseplant. The person should look mildly surprised rather than frightened. Natural indoor lighting, realistic European appearance, no text, no logo, no arrows, no graphic overlays.
Chapter 2 ā Can a Stink Bug Bite You?
One of the first questions people ask after discovering a strange insect is whether it can bite or sting.
In the case of typical stink bugs, the answer is reassuring: they are not known for aggressively biting humans.
Their mouthparts are designed primarily for piercing plant material and sucking plant juices. Unlike mosquitoes, which are adapted to feed on blood, stink bugs generally have no reason to seek out humans as a food source.
That does not mean you should handle one carelessly.
When threatened, a stink bug may attempt to defend itself by releasing its characteristic odor. Some people find this smell extremely unpleasant. The defensive secretion can also irritate sensitive skin in certain individuals, although serious reactions are uncommon.
Another important point is that people sometimes confuse stink bugs with other insects.
Many insects have somewhat similar shapes or colors, and some species that resemble stink bugs have completely different behaviors. Identification based on a single photograph can therefore be difficult, especially when the image is low resolution or the insect is shown from an unusual angle.
The insect in the reference image appears consistent with a stink bug, but a precise species identification would require a clearer view of important anatomical characteristics.
If you discover one indoors, there is generally no reason to panic.
Rather than crushing it with your hand, gently remove it using a container and a piece of paper, or use another safe removal method. Crushing a stink bug can release the defensive odor and make the encounter considerably more unpleasant.
