If You’re Over 70, Doctors Say You Should Know What Eating Bananas May Do to Your Body

Bananas are often considered one of the easiest fruits to eat: soft, naturally sweet, affordable, and packed with important nutrients.

But if you’re over 70, should you be eating them every day?

The answer isn't simply “yes” or “no.”

For most older adults, bananas can be part of a healthy, balanced diet. However, certain health conditions—particularly those involving blood sugar or kidney function—may make portion size and overall potassium intake more important.

Here are several things older adults should know.

1. Bananas provide important nutrients

A medium banana provides carbohydrates, fiber, vitamin B6, and potassium.

Potassium plays an important role in normal muscle contraction, nerve function, and fluid balance.

For healthy people, getting potassium from foods such as fruits and vegetables is generally encouraged as part of a balanced diet.

2. They can affect blood sugar

Bananas contain natural sugars and carbohydrates, so they can raise blood glucose after eating.

That doesn't mean people with diabetes need to avoid bananas.

The amount you eat, the banana's ripeness, and what you eat alongside it can all influence how it affects blood glucose.

A smaller portion paired with a source of protein or healthy fat may produce a different blood-sugar response than eating a large, very ripe banana by itself.

If you have diabetes, your healthcare professional or dietitian can help you determine portions that fit your individual eating plan.

3. Potassium may be the bigger consideration for some older adults

This is where the story becomes more complicated.
