Or within environments that few people ever examine closely.
That secrecy may explain why discoveries like the one shown in the photographs generate such intense reactions online.
People naturally become curious when they encounter something unfamiliar.
And unfamiliar things often inspire extraordinary theories.
The internet has a long history of transforming unusual natural discoveries into mysteries.
What begins as an unidentified fungus becomes an alien organism.
A strange root becomes a monster.
An underground growth becomes a hidden nest.
In reality, the natural world is often strange enough without requiring supernatural explanations.
The black structures shown in the photographs may appear bizarre, but they fit within a broader pattern of fungal diversity that scientists continue to explore.
6The discovery also highlights how little most people know about fungi compared with plants and animals.
While trees, flowers, birds, and mammals receive considerable attention, fungi remain one of the least understood major groups of organisms.
Yet they perform some of the most important functions in nature.
Without fungi, forests would struggle to survive.
Dead trees would accumulate.
Nutrients would remain trapped in organic material.
Ecosystems would function very differently.
Many fungi serve as nature's recyclers, breaking down dead matter and returning valuable nutrients to the environment.
