Chapter 2: Early Warning Signs That May Indicate a Kidney Problem

Kidney conditions can produce a variety of symptoms, although some people experience no obvious warning signs until the condition becomes more advanced.

One possible sign is a change in urination. Some individuals notice that they urinate more or less frequently than usual, while others experience unusually foamy urine, which can sometimes indicate excess protein. Foamy urine alone does not establish kidney disease, but persistent changes deserve medical attention.

Another potential warning sign is blood in the urine. Urine may appear pink, red, or brown, although blood can also be present in amounts that are not visible without laboratory testing. Blood in the urine can have many causes, including urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and kidney disease, so it should be evaluated.

Swelling is another symptom worth recognizing. When kidney function is impaired, the body may retain excess fluid. This can cause puffiness around the eyes or swelling in the feet, ankles, and legs.

Some people also experience fatigue, nausea, reduced appetite, or difficulty concentrating. These symptoms are nonspecific and may be associated with numerous health conditions. Nevertheless, persistent symptoms should not be ignored, especially when several occur together.

Pain deserves careful interpretation. Severe pain in the side or back may be associated with kidney stones, urinary obstruction, or infection, but kidney inflammation does not always cause pain. The location and severity of discomfort alone cannot identify the underlying condition.

It is also important to remember that kidney disease can exist without noticeable symptoms. People with diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, or a family history of certain kidney disorders may benefit from appropriate screening.

If you notice persistent changes in urination, unexplained swelling, or other concerning symptoms, contact a healthcare professional. Seek urgent medical attention for severe symptoms, markedly reduced urination, difficulty breathing, or visible blood in the urine accompanied by significant illness.
