Chapter 2: Itching, Skin Changes, and Other Clues
One symptom that often surprises people is persistent itching. The liver helps process substances that are removed through bile. When liver function is disrupted or bile flow becomes blocked, certain compounds can accumulate in the body and contribute to intense itching. In some cases, the itching may become more noticeable at night and occur without a visible rash.
Another important warning sign is jaundice, a condition that causes yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. Jaundice occurs when bilirubin, a yellow pigment normally processed by the liver, builds up in the bloodstream. It may also be accompanied by darker urine and lighter-colored stools.
Some people notice easy bruising or bleeding, which can occur because the liver plays a critical role in producing proteins needed for blood clotting. Others experience swelling in the abdomen or legs, ongoing weakness, or unexplained fever.
While social media posts often focus on a specific number of warning signs or unusual odors, medical experts note that liver disease does not follow a single pattern. Symptoms can vary significantly from person to person, and many individuals experience a combination of different signs rather than one clear indicator.
