Researchers offered several possible explanations for the observed patterns.

Some evolutionary psychologists suggest that preferences for certain height differences may have developed over long periods of human history. In this view, taller men may subconsciously be associated with protection, strength, or social status, while shorter women may be associated with youthfulness or femininity.

Other experts argue that cultural influences are equally important. Movies, television, advertising, social media, and long-standing social norms may all contribute to expectations about what an "ideal" couple looks like.

Because attraction develops through a combination of biological, psychological, and social influences, it is difficult to isolate a single cause.

The researchers also noted that preferences changed slightly depending on relationship goals. When participants considered long-term partnerships, some preferences became more pronounced, suggesting that physical characteristics may carry different symbolic meanings in committed relationships than in casual dating situations.

However, even within the study, there was substantial variation among participants.
