Bath towels are everyday household items—almost every home has them. Yet few people notice that this seemingly simple object hides a feature that has sparked countless online debates: the small embroidered border running along the towel. Some believe it’s just a decorative touch, while others insist it serves a much more practical function.

According to textile experts, this border on the towel is called a Dobby Border. It is woven using a special technique known as Dobby weaving, which creates patterns or textures that are different from the rest of the towel.

The clearest purpose of this detail is aesthetic enhancement. The Dobby border creates a contrasting texture compared to the soft cotton body of the towel. This makes the towel look more refined and luxurious, breaking the monotony of plain designs. That is also why Dobby borders are commonly found in hotel towels, spa towels, and high-end towel brands—places where visual appeal is highly valued.

But the Dobby border is not only for decoration. It also plays an important role in maintaining the towel’s shape and durability. This border is usually woven tighter and stronger than the rest of the towel, helping prevent shrinkage, warping, or stretching along the edges after multiple washes. Thanks to this special weaving structure, the towel stays flat, keeps its shape, and maintains its fresh appearance—even with frequent use.

Are there bath towels without a Dobby Border?

The answer is yes. Not all towels have a Dobby border. In fact, many basic or low-cost towels focus solely on cotton quality and absorbency, without including a decorative border. These towels still perform their primary function—drying the body—but they tend to shrink, warp at the edges, or lose their flat shape over time, especially after repeated washing.

Compared to towels with a Dobby border, borderless towels often look simpler and less elegant. However, for users who prioritize functionality and affordability, they remain a practical choice. The key is to pay attention to cotton quality, weave density, and towel thickness to ensure durability and prevent fraying or edge tearing.
