Mixing Laundry Detergent with Sugar: A Surprising Combo Everyone Will Love for Solving Household Problems

Few people realize that combining two simple ingredients like laundry detergent and sugar can create a “multi-purpose” mixture with countless useful benefits for your home. From repelling cockroaches and killing mosquitoes, to deodorizing drains and whitening stained towels—just mix these two ingredients properly and you'll notice the difference right away!

How to Make the Sugar–Detergent Mixture at Home

All you need is a small bowl. Mix sugar and laundry detergent in a 1:1 ratio, then add a little clean water and stir well until dissolved. You can use the mixture immediately or pour it into a cup or tray depending on your purpose.

Though simple, this solution offers surprising benefits for everyday household use. Here are some clever ways to use it:

1. Repel Cockroaches Without Any Chemicals

If cockroaches are invading your kitchen, bathroom, or hidden corners, this sugar-detergent mixture is a lifesaver. The sweet scent of sugar attracts cockroaches, while the detergent traps and kills them.

How to use: Mix sugar and detergent well, then pour into a small container or bottle cap. Place it in areas where cockroaches often appear—under cabinets, kitchen corners, or behind the washing machine. Over time, the roaches will disappear.

Note: Keep out of reach of children and pets for safety.

2. Kill Mosquitoes, Ants, and Small Insects

This mixture doesn’t just work on cockroaches. It also traps mosquitoes, ants, and other small insects using the same “sweet lure–deadly trap” principle. Mosquitoes are drawn to the sweet scent, fly into the container, and get stuck due to the detergent.

How to do it: Pour the sugar-detergent mix into a cup, cover the top with plastic wrap or paper, and poke a small hole in the center. Place the cup in a room corner, near windows, or anywhere mosquitoes enter.

You can also mix 1 tablespoon of detergent with 4 liters of water and spray it around your home twice a week for effective, budget-friendly pest control.

3. Remove Long-Lasting Yellow Stains from Towels

Face towels, bath towels, and white clothing often become yellowed over time and don’t come clean with regular washing. But soaking them in a sugar-detergent mixture can make the stains fade and eventually disappear.

How to do it: Mix detergent, sugar, and water, then soak the fabric for 1–2 hours. Rinse and wash as usual, either by hand or machine. You’ll be amazed at how gently yet effectively it brightens up your towels.

4. Quickly Clean Greasy Dishcloths and Kitchen Towels

Dishcloths and kitchen towels often absorb grease and odors. This mixture not only removes dirt but also deodorizes them.

How to use: Soak the cloths in the solution for 5–10 minutes, then rinse with clean water. For light stains, simply scrub directly with the mixture—no soaking needed.

5. Eliminate Drain Odors Effectively

Unpleasant smells from kitchen or bathroom drains can be annoying. Try pouring a cup of the sugar-detergent solution down the drain, let it sit for 15–20 minutes, then flush with water. The detergent removes residue, while the sugar helps neutralize odors and boosts cleaning power.

Repeat this 1–2 times a week to keep your drains fresh and clean.
