My Dad Introduced His “Friend” at Christmas — I Recognized Her Last Name
The Guest My Father Never Told Us About
The first time my mother-in-law refused to hold my newborn daughter, I thought she was simply nervous.
The second time, I felt hurt.
By the tenth time, I started wondering if she hated me.
Every time she came to our house, she washed her hands.
Not once.
Not twice.
Sometimes three or four times during a single visit.
She would wash them before touching anything in the kitchen.
She would wash them before sitting on the sofa.
And whenever I handed her my baby, she would smile awkwardly, take one look at the child, and gently hand her back to me.
At first, I tried not to take it personally.
But after months of watching my mother-in-law avoid touching her own granddaughter, I finally asked my husband:
“Why won't your mother hold our baby?”
His answer only made me more confused.
“I don't know.”
But he was hiding something.
And I would eventually discover that the reason had nothing to do with my daughter.
It had everything to do with something his mother had been told about me years before we ever met.
My mother-in-law, Denise, was a proud Black woman in her early sixties.
She was elegant, confident, and extremely particular about cleanliness.
When I first met her, she was polite to me.
But she kept her distance.
At the time, I assumed she was simply cautious around strangers.
After my husband, Marcus, and I got married, things didn't change.
Whenever Denise visited, she would wash her hands before greeting me.
I thought it was strange, but I didn't say anything.
Then I became pregnant.
I imagined that everything would change once the baby arrived.
I was wrong.
After our daughter, Lily, was born, Denise came to the hospital.
She stood beside my bed and smiled at the baby.
“She is beautiful,” she whispered.
I smiled.
“Do you want to hold her?”
Denise hesitated.
For a second, I thought she was going to say yes.
Instead, she shook her head.
“Maybe later.”
I handed Lily back to Marcus.
Denise walked to the bathroom.
I heard the water running.
For nearly a minute.
When she returned, she sat several feet away from us.
I couldn't understand it.
This was her first granddaughter.
Why didn't she want to hold her?
Over the next few weeks, Denise visited several times.
Every visit followed the same pattern.
She washed her hands repeatedly.
She avoided touching the baby's blankets.
She wouldn't pick up Lily's pacifier.
And if Lily started crying while I was in another room, Denise would call Marcus instead of picking her up.
One afternoon, I finally asked her.
“Denise, is something wrong?”
She looked surprised.
“No. Why?”
“You never hold Lily.”
Her expression changed.
“I don't want to make her uncomfortable.”
“She doesn't even know what uncomfortable means yet.”
Denise smiled faintly.
“I know.”
Then she changed the subject.
I walked away feeling rejected.
That night, I confronted Marcus.
“Your mother doesn't like me.”
Marcus looked genuinely surprised.
“Why would you think that?”
“She won't even touch our daughter.”
“She loves Lily.”
“Then why won't she hold her?”
Marcus sighed.
“I'll talk to her.”
But he never did.
Or at least, he never told me what she said.
A few months later, something happened that made everything worse.
I had invited Denise over for dinner.
I had spent hours cooking.
After dinner, I noticed her staring at the kitchen counter.
There were crumbs around the cutting board.
