My Black Mother-in-Law Was Always Washing Her Hands and Refused to Hold My Baby — Then I Learned the Truth
Chapter 2
I apologized.
“I'll clean that up.”
Denise immediately replied,
“You should be more careful about keeping things clean.”
Her tone wasn't harsh.
But something about the comment stayed with me.
I looked at my hands.
Then at her.
“Do you think I'm dirty?”
She seemed startled.
“No.”
But she wouldn't look me in the eye.
That night, I couldn't sleep.
I kept thinking about all those times she washed her hands after being around me.
I started wondering whether she thought I was an unclean mother.
Whether she thought I was contaminating her granddaughter.
And the more I thought about it, the angrier I became.
The Day Everything Changed
One Saturday afternoon, Denise came over unexpectedly.
Lily was sitting on the living-room floor playing with her toys.
I was folding laundry.
Denise walked in.
She smiled at Lily.
Then she immediately went to the bathroom.
I heard the water running.
Again.
I finally snapped.
I walked toward the bathroom.
“Denise.”
The water stopped.
She turned around.
I couldn't hide my frustration anymore.
“Why do you keep washing your hands every time you come here?”
She stared at me.
“I already told you.”
“No,” I said. “You didn't.”
I took a breath.
“You won't hold your granddaughter. You won't touch her toys. You wash your hands constantly. And every time you look at something I clean, you make a comment.”
My voice started shaking.
“Do you think I'm a dirty person?”
Denise's face suddenly changed.
She looked heartbroken.
“No.”
“Then what is it?”
She remained silent for several seconds.
Then she sat down.
And finally, she told me the truth.
“Your Mother-in-Law Used to Call Me Dirty”
Denise looked down at her hands.
“My mother-in-law did this to me.”
I didn't understand.
She continued.
“When I married Marcus's father, his mother never accepted me.”
She told me that her husband's mother had constantly criticized her.
Her clothes.
Her cooking.
Her house.
Her appearance.
But there was one insult that Denise remembered more than anything.
She had repeatedly been told that she was “dirty.”
Not because she actually was.
Because her mother-in-law believed she wasn't good enough for the family.
Denise had spent years trying to prove herself.
She cleaned constantly.
She washed her hands until her skin became dry.
She scrubbed her kitchen before guests arrived.
She worried obsessively about whether people thought her home was clean enough.
And even decades later, those words had stayed with her.
Then she looked at me.
“I know what it feels like when someone makes you feel disgusting.”
My anger disappeared.
The Truth About Lily
I asked quietly,
“Then why don't you hold Lily?”
Denise began crying.
“I've been afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
She looked toward my daughter.
“Of making a mistake.”
She explained that after years of being criticized, she had become terrified of contaminating things around babies.
She had convinced herself that if she touched Lily without washing her hands enough, something terrible might happen.
“It isn't because I think you're dirty,” she said.
