- Joint stiffness, especially in the morning
- Mild to moderate pain
- Swelling around the affected joints
- Reduced flexibility
- Difficulty gripping small objects
- Changes in finger shape over time
Interestingly, some people experience very little pain once the bumps become fully developed.
Can They Be Treated?
There is currently no cure for osteoarthritis, but symptoms can often be managed successfully.
Treatment may include:
- Gentle hand exercises
- Heat or cold therapy
- Anti-inflammatory medications when appropriate
- Topical pain-relief gels
- Occupational or physical therapy
- Splints for selected joints during painful flare-ups
In more severe cases involving persistent pain or loss of function, a hand specialist may recommend additional treatment options.
