After 32 years of marriage, my husband refused to let me touch the cast on his right leg — I thought he just didn't want me worrying about him until I accidentally saw what he was hiding underneath it.

Conor had always been like a little kid whenever he was sick or injured.

A cold meant soup, tea, extra blankets, and constant updates about exactly how terrible he felt.

So when one of his coworkers brought him home one afternoon with his right leg in a cast, I expected him to be even more helpless than usual.

He told me he'd slipped on a wet floor at work and fractured his ankle.

"The doctor said six weeks," he sighed. "This is going to be miserable."

That sounded exactly like Conor.

For the first few hours, he happily let me bring him food, refill his water, and arrange pillows around him.

But the moment I reached toward the cast, he pulled his leg away.

"I've got it."

I laughed.

"Since when?"

"I just don't want you bumping it."

The next morning, I offered to wrap it before his shower.

"No. I'll do it."

A few days later, I tried to adjust the padding near the top.

Conor jerked his leg away.

"Don't touch the cast."

I stared at him.

This was the same man who once made me check his temperature four times in one evening.

Now he wouldn't even let me near his injury.

Over the next two weeks, it got stranger.

He started taking his showers with the bathroom door locked and refused to let me help him cover the cast.

At night, he carefully kept the injured leg on his side of the bed, always out of my reach.

And whenever I asked about his follow-up appointment, he changed the subject.

Then one night, I heard a crash from the bathroom.

I ran in and found Conor sitting on the floor beside the tub.

Part of the cast had cracked open.

He immediately grabbed a towel and tried to cover it.

"Don't touch it."

Before he could cover it, I saw what was hidden beneath the cast.

My stomach dropped.

"Conor… what the hell is that?"

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

I stood frozen in the bathroom doorway, staring at the jagged opening in Conor's cast.

Beneath the broken plaster, where I expected to see swollen skin, bruising, or perhaps a bandage, there was something else entirely.

A small, tightly wrapped bundle had been secured against his lower leg with strips of medical tape.

Conor looked at me with an expression I had never seen in thirty-two years of marriage.

It wasn't pain.

It wasn't embarrassment.

It was fear.

"Please," he whispered. "Just give me a minute to explain."

I couldn't even answer him.

"What is that?" I asked again, my voice trembling. "What have you been hiding from me?"

He reached for the towel, but this time I stepped forward and caught his wrist.

"Don't."

He stopped.

I had spent more than three decades knowing this man. I knew how he took his coffee, which side of the bed he preferred, and the particular expression he made when he was pretending not to be upset. I knew the sound of his footsteps on the stairs and the difference between his ordinary sigh and the one that meant he was worried about money.

But the man sitting on the bathroom floor looked like a stranger.

"Is that why you wouldn't let me touch your leg?" I asked.

Conor lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

The simplicity of his answer hurt more than I expected.

I stepped back, trying to steady myself against the sink.

"Have you been lying to me this entire time?"

He opened his mouth, then closed it again.

That hesitation was all I needed.

I turned toward the door.

"Where are you going?" he asked.

"Somewhere I can think without wondering what else my husband has been hiding from me."

"Please don't leave."

I stopped with one hand on the doorframe.

"Then tell me the truth, Conor. All of it. Right now."

He stared at the broken cast for a long moment.

Then, in a voice so quiet I almost didn't hear it, he said, "The accident wasn't exactly what I told you."

My heart began pounding.

"What does that mean?"

He looked up at me.

"I didn't slip on a wet floor."

For a moment, the bathroom seemed to tilt around me.

Thirty-two years of marriage, and the first thought that entered my mind was not that he might be hurt.

It was that I no longer knew whether anything he had told me was true.

I helped Conor get back to the bedroom, although I did it more out of instinct than affection. He was still pale from the fall, and the damaged cast made it difficult for him to move safely.

Once he was settled against the pillows, I stood at the foot of the bed with my arms folded.

"Start talking."

He rubbed his face with both hands.

"Three weeks ago, I received a phone call from someone I hadn't spoken to in almost forty years."

"Who?"

"My brother."

I blinked.

Conor had never mentioned having a brother.

At least, not in any way that suggested there was someone still alive who might call him after four decades.

"You have a brother?"

He nodded slowly.

"His name is Michael."

I waited for him to continue.

"He and I haven't spoken since we were young. We had a terrible falling-out after our father died. I thought he wanted nothing to do with me, and he thought the same about me. Eventually, we stopped trying."

"Why have I never heard about him?"

"Because I was ashamed."

"Of what?"

Conor looked toward the window.

"When our father died, there was a dispute over the family house. Michael believed I had taken money that belonged to both of us. I believed he'd been hiding debts from me. We said things we couldn't take back."

"And for forty years, you never thought to tell your wife?"

"I thought it was over."

His answer was so inadequate that I almost laughed.

"That explains why you never mentioned him. It doesn't explain the cast."

"I know."

He swallowed hard.

"Michael contacted me because he was sick. He wanted to see me before it was too late."

Something in his voice changed when he said that. Beneath the fear, I heard genuine grief.

For a moment, I felt sorry for him.

Then I remembered the bundle beneath his cast.

"And what does your brother have to do with your leg?"

Conor looked at the floor.

"Everything."
