He read it twice.

Then he looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

I shook my head.

"You didn't know."

"I should have."

"Maybe."

He looked at the photograph of our twins on my phone.

Then said:

"I don't want my children ever wondering whether I wanted them."

That was the moment I knew something had truly changed.

The Surprise We Never Expected

Months later, on the twins' first birthday, we held a small celebration.

Nothing extravagant.

Just family.

Cake.

Balloons.

Photos.

The twins were crawling everywhere.

Trevor was on the floor playing with them.

My mother was laughing.

And for the first time, there was a framed photograph of Frank on our mantel.

Trevor had placed it there.

Underneath it was a small inscription:

He taught me by leaving.
He taught me again by coming back.

I asked Trevor why he kept the photograph.

He said:

"Because I don't want to remember him only for the twelve years he was gone."

He paused.

"I want to remember what he did with the time he had left."

Then he handed me an envelope.

"What's that?"

"Open it."

I did.

Inside was a hotel reservation.

A beach resort.

I stared at him.

"Trevor..."

He laughed.

"It's not what you think."

Inside the envelope was another piece of paper.

It said:

Four days.

I looked at him.

"What is this?"

He smiled.

"Four days away."

I stared.

"Without the babies?"

"No."

"Then what?"

He pointed at the bottom.

All four of us.

I laughed.

Then I noticed something else.

There were two additional names on the reservation.

My mother.

And my sister.

"What's this?"
