As though people mattered according to how well they matched the scenery.

Ryan stopped eating.

Selena continued.

“And he'll be in every single photograph.”

I stared at her.

“Yes.”

“We're paying for a beautiful, elegant wedding. I don't want the entire ceremony turning into people whispering about your brother.”

My chest tightened.

“What exactly do you think they're going to whisper about?”

She hesitated.

“I don't know.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Jacob leaned back in his chair.

“Don't make this uglier than it is, Jodie. We're talking about presentation.”

“No,” I said quietly. “You're talking about Matt.”

Jacob sighed.

“We're paying a significant amount for this wedding. I think that gives us the right to make sure it doesn't look ridiculous.”

Ryan's chair scraped sharply against the floor.

“Then keep your money.”

Everyone went silent.

Ryan stood.

“Matt walks Jo down that aisle, or there is no wedding.”

Selena blinked.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

“Ryan.”

“No, Mom.”

He looked directly at both of his parents.

“You don't get a vote on this.”

For a moment, I thought the conversation was over.

I was wrong.

The Comments Became Quieter — and Crueler

After that dinner, Selena became more careful.

She didn't openly insult Matthew.

She didn't need to.

She started using phrases like:

“Maybe there are other options.”

“Perhaps we should think about the photographs.”

“Wouldn't it look more balanced if…”

“Just something to consider.”

Then I discovered she had contacted our photographer.

Apparently, she had suggested avoiding full-length photographs of Matthew.

The photographer told me because he was uncomfortable with the request.

I confronted Selena.

She called it a misunderstanding.

Then Jacob suggested having another man walk beside Matthew.

“For balance,” he said.

I asked him what exactly needed balancing.

He didn't answer.

His coffee became extremely interesting.

Then, two days before the wedding, Selena made one final suggestion.

There was a side entrance near the front of the venue.

“Maybe Matthew could come through there instead.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

She hesitated.

“It would just be less distracting.”

I hung up.

That night, I sat on the edge of my bed in silence.

I thought about Matthew at nineteen.

Matthew sitting at that kitchen table.

Matthew learning how to braid hair.

Matthew sleeping in a chair at work because he refused to leave me alone.

Matthew putting coins into a vending machine so I could have hot chocolate.

Matthew signing that guardian form.

And then I thought about someone suggesting he should enter my wedding through a side door because his presence might “distract” people.

I was furious.

Not because they had insulted my brother.

Because they had no idea what they were insulting.

They saw a man who was shorter than average.

I saw the man who had spent fourteen years standing between me and the worst parts of life.

They saw an awkward suit.

I saw the person who had worn the same winter coat for five years because he needed the money for my school supplies.

They saw someone who might look different in photographs.

I saw home.

The Morning of My Wedding

And now, hours later, I was standing in my bridal suite watching him adjust his shoulders in the mirror.

Suddenly, all those little comments made sense.

The jokes.

The glances.

The suggestions.

The “presentation.”

Matthew wasn't worried about walking me down the aisle.

He was worried he would embarrass me.
