I handed it to her.

She looked at it.

“What is this?”

“A borrowing agreement.”

She stared at me.

“You're serious?”

“Yes.”

The agreement wasn't complicated.

It said that anything borrowed had to be:

  • Returned on time.

  • Clean.

  • Completely dry.

  • In the same condition it was received.

  • Returned with all parts and accessories.

And there was one additional requirement.

A $350 refundable deposit.

Denise looked at the paper, then at me.

“You're charging me a deposit to borrow your stuff?”

“Yes.”

She crossed her arms.

“This is ridiculous.”

I remained calm.

“Then you don't have to borrow anything.”

She called me petty.

She said I was acting like she was a stranger.

She reminded me that we were neighbors.

I told her that being neighbors was exactly why I wanted to avoid resentment.

I wasn't trying to punish her.

I was trying to make the expectations clear.

If something went wrong, we wouldn't have to argue about what had been agreed upon.

She could simply rent the equipment instead.

And that's exactly what she said she would do.

Then Her Backup Plan Fell Apart

For a while, I thought that was the end of it.

But on the day of the graduation party, Denise knocked on my door again.

She looked exhausted.

“What happened?” I asked.

“The rental company delivered the wrong equipment.”

She had tables that were too small and a cooler that couldn't hold everything she needed.

The party was only hours away.

She needed my equipment.

I looked at her.

She looked at me.

Neither of us said anything for a moment.

Finally, she sighed.

“Fine. I'll sign it.”

I handed her the agreement.

She read through it carefully this time.

Then she signed.

She gave me the $350 deposit.

I brought out the tables, cooler, and crock pot.

I even helped her carry everything over.

I didn't want to make her struggle simply because we had disagreed.

The party went ahead.

And, surprisingly, everything worked out.

The Next Day, Something Unexpected Happened

The following afternoon, Denise showed up at my door.

She was carrying every item I had lent her.

The tables were clean.

The cooler was dry.

The crock pot had been washed.

Everything was exactly where it was supposed to be.

She handed me the equipment.

Then she handed me the agreement.

I checked everything.

Nothing was missing.

Nothing was damaged.

Everything had been returned on time.

So I gave her the entire $350 deposit back.

She looked at the money for a moment.

Then she looked at me.

“I owe you an apology.”

I didn't say anything.

She continued.

“I should have stopped using the mixer when it started struggling.”

I nodded.

“I should have called you.”

Another pause.

“And I should have paid for the repair.”

That was the first time since the mixer had been damaged that I felt the tension between us begin to disappear.

I told her I appreciated hearing that.
