His eyes filled with tears.
"That I would never tell you unless I knew I was dying."
I didn't know what to say.
Then he reached toward the drawer beside his bed.
"Open it."
Inside was an old envelope.
My name was written on it.
In my mother's handwriting.
The Letter
My hands were shaking when I opened it.
The letter was dated more than twenty years earlier.
Before my mother died.
Before I understood what was happening.
The first line said:
"If you're reading this, Daniel has finally told you the truth."
I could barely breathe.
I continued.
My mother explained that Daniel had never been just her husband.
Before I was born, she had been involved with another man.
That man was my biological father.
But shortly after discovering she was pregnant, she learned something that terrified her.
He didn't want a child.
He wanted nothing to do with her.
My mother decided she would raise me alone.
Then she met Daniel.
And everything changed.
According to the letter, Daniel knew from the beginning that I wasn't biologically his.
He knew before he married my mother.
He knew before he carried me home from the hospital.
He knew when he signed my school papers.
He knew every time someone asked whether I was his daughter.
And he never cared.
But There Was One More Secret
I looked at Daniel.
"You knew?"
He nodded.
"Your mother told me everything."
"Then why didn't you ever tell me?"
His eyes filled with tears.
"Because she was afraid you'd think you weren't wanted."
I stared at him.
He continued.
"She thought one day you'd find out and believe your biological father left because there was something wrong with you."
He squeezed my hand.
"But there was never anything wrong with you."
His voice broke.
"I wanted you."
Those three words destroyed me.
Because suddenly, eighteen years of memories took on a completely different meaning.
Every packed lunch.
Every birthday.
Every school play.
