Never place your microwave in this spot if your kitchen is small — it’s bad for you and bad for the machine!

Many households with limited kitchen space place the microwave on top of the refrigerator to save space and for convenience. It may sound reasonable, but according to both feng shui experts and appliance specialists, this placement is strongly discouraged. What seems like a harmless arrangement not only violates feng shui principles but also poses potential risks to both the appliance and the users' health.

1. Feng Shui Conflict – Clash Between Metal and Fire

In feng shui, the refrigerator represents the Metal element, while the microwave belongs to the Fire element. Placing the microwave on top of the refrigerator causes these opposing elements to clash, disrupting the energy balance in the kitchen. This imbalance can lead to negative effects on finances, block prosperity, and even impact the health of family members.

Moreover, this combination is also believed to easily cause tension and disharmony within the household.

2. Damage to Appliances – Both the Microwave and Refrigerator Are Overworked

Beyond feng shui beliefs, placing the microwave on top of the fridge directly affects the lifespan of both devices.

Refrigerators release heat from their cooling system, especially from the top. When a microwave is placed above it, both appliances become overheated due to overlapping heat, which reduces their efficiency. The refrigerator has to work harder to cool down, while the microwave becomes more prone to overheating, malfunctions, or even fire hazards.

3. Safety Risks for Users

Improper placement can unintentionally endanger the homeowner. One obvious issue is that when the microwave is positioned too high, removing hot food becomes difficult. Hot liquids or dishes can spill when opening the door, increasing the risk of burns.

Additionally, electromagnetic waves from the microwave may interfere with nearby electronic devices, leading to signal disruptions or electrical system issues, posing potential health and safety risks.

Placing the microwave on top of the refrigerator also increases the risk of fire or explosion. The top of the fridge emits heat from its cooling system, while the microwave also produces heat during operation. When stacked together, excessive heat buildup can lead to electrical overload or fire.

4. A Better Solution

Instead of setting the microwave on top of the refrigerator, designate a separate space for it in the kitchen. You can install a sturdy shelf or place it in a well-ventilated corner to allow proper heat dissipation. This also maintains a safe distance between electrical appliances and creates a more functional, organized kitchen layout.
