Nurse kneels, holding newborn baby tight amid earthquake

On March 28, Myanmar was hit by a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale, affecting many other countries.

In the city of Shuhe, Yunnan Province (China), one of the areas most strongly affected by the earthquake, a touching moment was recorded and widely shared on social media.

At the Pediatrics Department of Jingsheng Hospital, the ceiling lights shook violently, and alarm sirens blared loudly. In this critical moment, two female nurses demonstrated remarkable courage.

At the time of the earthquake, nurse Li (28 years old) immediately knelt down and tightly held a newborn baby in her arms. Meanwhile, nurse Zhang, standing nearby, tried to hold on to two baby strollers to prevent them from being swept away.

The surveillance camera recorded scenes of the ceiling continuously dropping dust, and the stroller wheels slipping due to the shaking, but the two nurses remained steadfast in their positions.

After the earthquake, nurse Li suffered bruised knees from colliding with the floor tiles, while nurse Zhang broke a nail from applying too much force. However, their first response was not to tend to their own injuries but to comfort the crying children, gently patting them and singing lullabies to calm them down.

Moved by the courageous actions of the two healthcare workers, netizens praised them: “They are not just nurses; they are mothers with angel wings”; “When disaster strikes, there are people like light, not loud but deeply touching.”

In a later interview, nurse Li smiled and shared that at that moment, she didn’t have time to be scared and only thought about how to protect the children safely. The stroller, which had almost been pulled out of shape, has now become a "memorable relic" of the department, with a fallen milk bottle inside, left behind during the earthquake.

According to the local authorities of Shuhe City, the earthquake affected 458 households, totaling 1,705 people. Among them, two people were slightly injured, and the situation is now stable. Some houses, high-rise buildings, and old structures in the city and surrounding towns suffered partial damage.
