But lymphedema has many causes, and its presence does not automatically mean cancer.
Other Cancer Warning Signs Matter Too
Rather than focusing on one symptom, doctors consider the overall clinical picture.
Depending on the cancer type, possible warning signs can include:
Unexplained weight loss
Losing weight without intentionally changing diet or exercise deserves medical attention, particularly when the change is significant or persistent.
Persistent fatigue
Fatigue that doesn't improve with adequate sleep can have many causes, including anemia, infections, hormonal disorders, chronic disease, and cancer.
Unexplained bleeding
Blood in the stool, urine, vomit, or coughing up blood should be evaluated.
Persistent pain
Pain that is unexplained, persistent, or progressively worsening should not simply be ignored.
New or changing lumps
A new lump or mass should be assessed by a healthcare professional.
Changes in bowel or bladder habits
Persistent changes can have many causes but may warrant investigation.
None of these signs proves that a person has cancer.
They are simply reasons to seek appropriate medical evaluation.
Why Early Evaluation Matters
One of the biggest mistakes people can make is assuming that a persistent symptom is βjust part of getting older.β
A swollen ankle may be caused by something relatively simple.
But if it persists, repeatedly returns, affects only one side, or occurs alongside other symptoms, finding the cause becomes important.
Doctors may examine the legs, review medications, measure blood pressure, and order blood or urine tests.
Depending on the situation, they may also use ultrasound, heart testing, imaging studies, or other diagnostic procedures.
The goal isn't to assume the worst.
