The kidneys play a crucial role in the body’s metabolism and detoxification process. When kidney function works properly, nutrients are processed efficiently and waste products are removed from the body.

However, certain everyday habits that may seem harmless can gradually damage kidney health. According to health experts, people with weak kidneys often share several common lifestyle habits. If these habits continue for a long time, they may increase the risk of kidney disease.

Here are four habits experts recommend avoiding to help protect kidney health.

1. Eating Too Much Red Meat

Red meat such as pork and beef is a common part of many diets. However, research from scientists at the Duke-NUS Medical School and the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health at the National University of Singapore suggests that people who consume large amounts of red meat may have a 40% higher risk of kidney failure compared with those who eat less.

Nutrition specialist Lauren Graf explained that the kidneys are responsible for removing excess acids and processing protein from the diet. Consuming excessive protein—especially from red meat—can increase the workload on the kidneys. Over time, this strain may lead to declining kidney function.

2. Not Drinking Enough Water

Most organs in the body—including the kidneys, liver, blood vessels, and skin—require adequate water to function properly.

When people drink too little water, the body produces less urine. This makes it harder to flush out waste products and minerals from the body. Over time, these substances can accumulate and form kidney stones.

The National Kidney Foundation in the United States recommends that adults drink about 8 to 12 cups of water per day to support kidney health.

3. Frequently Holding in Urine

Regularly holding urine for long periods can harm the urinary system.

According to urologist Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt from Orlando Health in the United States, holding urine can create conditions that allow bacteria to grow. This may lead to urinary tract infections, which can spread to the kidneys if left untreated.

In addition, delaying urination allows minerals in the urine—such as uric acid and calcium—to accumulate, increasing the risk of kidney stones or urinary stones.

4. Staying Up Late Frequently

Late-night habits may also silently harm kidney health.

Nighttime is when kidney cells begin repairing and regenerating, particularly during deep sleep. Staying up late can disrupt this process and may lead to hormonal imbalances and high blood pressure—both of which can negatively affect kidney function.

Research published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology found that people who sleep less than six hours per night experience faster decline in kidney filtration function compared with those who sleep seven to eight hours.

Protecting Kidney Health Starts With Everyday Habits

Experts emphasize that maintaining healthy lifestyle habits is one of the best ways to protect kidney function.

Avoiding excessive red meat, drinking enough water, not holding urine, and maintaining a healthy sleep schedule can help reduce the burden on the kidneys and support long-term health.
