Although indigestion is often felt in the upper abdomen, digestive discomfort can be perceived more generally and may be difficult to localize.

People may describe symptoms such as:

  • Fullness after eating
  • Bloating
  • Burping
  • Nausea
  • Burning or discomfort
  • Feeling unusually full after a small meal

Eating very large meals, consuming foods that personally trigger symptoms, eating rapidly, or drinking alcohol may worsen digestive discomfort in some people.

However, recurring abdominal pain should not automatically be labeled as indigestion without considering the broader pattern.

A symptom that happens repeatedly deserves more attention than a one-time episode after an unusually heavy meal.

4. Gastroenteritis Can Cause Pain Around the Navel

An infection or inflammation affecting the digestive tract can also produce abdominal pain.

Gastroenteritis is commonly associated with symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and sometimes fever.

The pain may occur in different parts of the abdomen, including near the navel.

In many cases, the illness begins relatively suddenly and improves over several days. During this period, maintaining hydration can be important, especially when vomiting or diarrhea is significant.

But there is an important distinction between short-lived stomach illness and abdominal pain that continues long after digestive symptoms should have improved.

Persistent or worsening pain should be assessed rather than repeatedly attributed to a stomach bug.

5. Early Appendicitis Can Sometimes Begin Near the Navel

One of the reasons persistent pain around the belly button deserves attention is that appendicitis can sometimes begin with pain around the navel.

The classic pattern is not always present immediately.

Pain may initially be vague or centered around the belly button before later becoming more noticeable in the lower right abdomen.

Other symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fever, and increasing abdominal tenderness.

Not everyone experiences the same combination of symptoms.

The important point is that abdominal pain that starts around the navel and progressively becomes more severe—particularly when it moves toward the lower right side—should not be ignored.

Appendicitis requires prompt medical evaluation.

6. Umbilical Hernia Can Cause Localized Discomfort

A hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weakened area of the abdominal wall.

An umbilical hernia develops near the belly button and may produce a visible bulge or swelling.

Some hernias cause little or no discomfort.

Others can produce:

  • Aching around the navel
  • Pressure
  • Tenderness
  • Pain that becomes more noticeable with lifting, coughing, or straining

A bulge may be easier to notice when standing or straining.

A painful or increasingly firm lump deserves medical evaluation.

A hernia that suddenly becomes extremely painful, particularly when the bulge cannot be pushed back in, may represent a more urgent problem.

7. Irritable Bowel Syndrome Can Cause Recurrent Abdominal Pain

Some people have repeated abdominal pain associated with changes in bowel habits.
