If your house suddenly has a strange smell or you notice unusual bite marks, be careful — harmful insects may soon wreak havoc in your home.
A study shows that up to 100 species of bugs live in our houses. Many of them are completely harmless and so tiny they’re hard to detect, but some insects carry pathogens and may be lurking in places you don’t even notice.
1. Strange odors
Areas where cockroaches live often have an oily, pungent smell. They also leave reddish-brown streaks. If you detect these signs, you can deal with them using baking soda, boric acid, peppermint, or lemongrass essential oil.
2. Unusual sounds
You may hear strange noises coming from the walls or floors, especially at night. Another sign of termite infestation is a hollow sound when you tap on wooden surfaces.
3. Holes in clothing
If you find holes in your clothes, you may be dealing with moths. These insects live in closets, as natural fibers (wool, silk, etc.) are their food source. To eliminate them, wash all your clothes, then thoroughly vacuum the house, especially carpets.
4. Problems with plants
Many insects can damage plants. To get rid of them, you can wipe the leaves with a damp cloth or rinse them in the bathtub. Cotton swabs dipped in alcohol, vegetable oil, or insecticidal soap sprays can also help remove them.
5. Lots of ladybugs and spiders in your home
If you see many spiders indoors, it means there’s a food source for them. Spiders often feed on mites, flies, and scale insects. So, be cautious — the presence of spiders may signal that other pests are already invading your home.
6. Yellow stains on paper
Silverfish feed on sugar and starch found in paper, leaving behind yellow stains on books, documents, wallpaper, and more. To repel them, you can try natural methods like cedarwood or cinnamon.
7. Unusual bite marks
If you wake up and notice bite marks, it may be a sign that bed bugs have invaded your home. This is when you should deep-clean, vacuum everything in the bedroom, and get rid of clutter to solve the problem.
