Residents of S-Town were enjoying an ordinary day when dark clouds began gathering overhead. Within minutes, heavy rain transformed into a barrage of ice as large hailstones started falling from the sky. Meteorologists explain that hail forms when strong updrafts inside thunderstorms carry water droplets high into extremely cold parts of the atmosphere. These droplets freeze and grow larger as additional layers of ice accumulate around them. Eventually, the hailstones become too heavy for the storm to support and fall to the ground.
While many hailstorms last only a short time, they can cause significant damage in just a few minutes. Vehicles are especially vulnerable, with dents, cracked windshields, and shattered windows among the most common forms of destruction. Homes can also suffer damage to roofs, siding, and outdoor equipment. Large hail may even pose a risk of injury to people and animals caught outdoors.
