This discovery generated headlines suggesting that cockroach milk could become the next major “superfood.”

But that leap goes much further than the scientific evidence currently allows.

Is It Really Four Times More Nutritious Than Cow's Milk?

This is where viral social-media claims become misleading.

There have been reports describing the energy content of the protein crystals as several times higher per unit of mass than that of conventional dairy milk.

But saying that this means cockroach milk is “four times better” than cow's milk is not scientifically precise.

Nutrition is not measured using one single number called “better.”

A food's nutritional value depends on many factors, including:

  • Protein quality
  • Fat composition
  • Carbohydrate content
  • Vitamins and minerals
  • Digestibility
  • Bioavailability
  • Calories
  • How much of the food is actually consumed

A substance can be extremely calorie-dense without automatically being healthier.

Therefore, a high energy density does not prove that cockroach milk is a superior food for humans.

Humans Aren't Drinking Cockroach Milk

Another important point is that cockroach milk is not currently a normal commercial beverage.

Researchers have studied the secretion and its crystals in laboratories, but obtaining enough material from cockroaches to produce a conventional milk product would be extremely impractical.

Imagine trying to collect enough secretion from individual insects to supply supermarkets around the world.

It would be neither simple nor economical.

Researchers would therefore need to find ways to produce the relevant proteins or nutrients through biotechnology if the concept were ever developed into a scalable food ingredient.

Could Biotechnology Change That?

Possibly.
