The ballroom was transformed for the occasion.
White roses and orchids filled the room. Soft lights reflected from the tables, and arrangements of flowers seemed to stretch everywhere guests looked.
Sarah wore an ivory silk wedding gown.
Rashid wore a traditional white kandura.
As the ceremony began, golden evening light came through the windows, creating the kind of scene that photographers dream about.
But Sarah barely noticed the decorations.
She was watching Rashid.
Standing beneath a canopy of flowers, surrounded by family and friends, they exchanged vows.
People cried.
People laughed.
Phones appeared everywhere as guests tried to capture the moment.
For Sarah, however, the most important part wasn't the spectacle around them.
It was the man standing in front of her.
She had once thought she might never marry. Now she was promising to share her life with someone she genuinely believed was her great love.
The celebration continued long after the ceremony.
There was dinner, music, speeches and dancing.
Friends who had known Sarah through the heartbreak of her previous relationship watched her dance with her new husband and saw something they hadn't seen in a long time.
She looked completely happy.
The dancing continued until around midnight.
Eventually, Sarah and Rashid said goodbye to their guests and left the reception in a vintage Rolls-Royce.
They waved through the window as the car pulled away.
For everyone watching, it looked like the perfect ending to a perfect wedding.
In reality, it was the beginning of a night none of them would ever forget.
Their First Night as Husband and Wife
Sarah and Rashid reached their honeymoon suite at approximately 1:00 in the morning.
They were exhausted.
The excitement of the wedding, hours of conversation, photographs, dancing and greeting guests had finally caught up with them.
Yet they were happy.
For months, their lives had been dominated by wedding preparations. There had always been another decision to make, another guest to contact, another detail requiring attention.
Now, for the first time, everything was quiet.
They were husband and wife.
According to Sarah's later recollection, Rashid kissed her gently on the forehead before they fell asleep.
He told her he was the luckiest man in the world.
Then he reached for her hand.
Sarah fell asleep beside him.
At that moment, she believed they had decades ahead of them.
They had discussed places they wanted to visit.
They had talked about their future home.
They had imagined anniversaries they would celebrate years from now.
They had made the ordinary plans couples make when they assume time is waiting for them.
