The little hole near your sink’s rim? It’s more useful than you think
Most bathroom sinks have a small hole located near the faucet. Many people wonder if this small hole is unnecessary or if it serves any special purpose.
In fact, this modest little round hole, located about one-third of the way down from the top of the sink, is a smart feature that reflects the thoughtfulness and foresight of the designer, who anticipated potential situations.
This small hole is connected to the drain pipe below. While using the sink, there are often cases where users forget to turn off the faucet (for example, stepping away to answer a phone call while waiting for the sink to fill). In such cases, once the water level reaches two-thirds of the sink, it will flow down the drain, preventing the water from overflowing onto the floor and flooding the bathroom.
Although beneficial, this overflow hole can also cause some inconvenience for users. Since it is located in a rather tricky spot, bacteria and mold can easily build up around the drain pipe, causing unpleasant odors.
Therefore, if you notice a bad smell in your bathroom, especially from this small hole, you can mix vinegar with baking soda and pour it into the hole of the sink.
The biochemical reaction will remove dirt in the drain pipe within 5 to 10 minutes. Finally, flush the sink with warm water to clean it thoroughly. This method will ensure that your bathroom stays clean and fresh.
